Fabio Cannavaro is a retired Italian football player widely acknowledged as one of the best defenders of all time.

In addition to successful league play, Fabio accomplished a lot during his time in the Italian national team. With Fabio on the team, Italy won consecutive Under-21 European Championships in 1994 and 1996, and in 1997 Fabio earned his first senior cap. As team captain, Fabio led the Italian team to victory in the 2006 FIFA World Cup and received the FIFA World Player of the Year award. So far, Fabio is the only defender to received this award. As a young boy Fabio played for a local Bagnoli team and got the attention of talent scouts from SSC Napoli. Fabio became a ball boy for the club and could watch his idols Diego Maradona and Ciro Ferrara play. Eventually, he was deemed ready to join the team started to play alongside his childhood idols. Fabio made his Serie A debut in1993 in a match against Juventus.

In 2002, Fabio was transferred to Inter (Internazionale) for €23 millions. Inter reached the semi-finals of Champions League during the 2002/2003 season and also finished second in Serie A. Due to injury, Fabio was forced to refrain from playing a lot of matches during his second season with Inter.

After two years with Inter, Fabio moved to Juventus where he reunited with his former team mates Lilian Thuram and Gianluigi Buffon from Parma to form an impressive defense. Juventus won the Scudetti in 2005 and 2006, and Fabio received the Oscar del Calcio award for his debut season with Juventus.

In 2006, Fabio transferred to Real Madrid where he remained for three seasons. He was named FIFA World Player of the Year in 2006, and Real Madrid won La Liga in 2006/2007 and 2007/2008. When Fabio’s contract with Real Madrid expired, he returned to Juventus in time for the 2009/2010 season.

In late 2009 Fabio was injured and had a hard time healing. His contract with Juventus was not renewed, and in June 2010 it was announced that Fabio had signed on for two years with Al-Ahli Dubai, a team in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Football League. Fabio played 16 matches for Al-Ahli Dubai before retiring from football in June 2011 due to a severe knee problem. Since then, Fabio has served as a global brand ambassador and technical consultant for the Al-Ahli Club of Dubai.

Luís Filipe Madeira Caeiro Figo is a retired Portuguese footballer (midfielder). Figo started his career in Sporting CP where he won both the Under-16 European Championships and the Under-21 World Championships. His first international cap as a senior for Sporting CP arrived in 1991.

Michael James Owen is a professional football player from England. He is included in the FIFA 100 (Brazilian striker Pelé’s list of the hundred greatest living footballers) and received the prestigious Ballon d’Or in 2001. He has also received the Premier League Golden Boot twice (1997/1998 and 1998/1999) and been named both BBC Sports Personality of the Year (1998) and Carling Premiership Player of the Year (1997/1998).

As a child, Beckham attended Bobby Charlton’s football school and played for the Ridgeway Rover, a local youth team coached by Beckham’s father. He then attended Tottenham Hotspur’s school of excellence and joined the club, before switching to Brimsdown Rovers youth team for a two year stint. Zinedine Zidane is a retired French football player and the only three-time FIFA World Player of the Year winner. Zidane received the Ballon d’Or in 1998, and in 2004 he was voted as the best European footballer of the previous 50 years in UEFA’s 50th anniversary Golden Jubilee Poll. He helped France to victories in the 1998 World Cup as well as in the 2000 European Championship, and he also captained France to the 200 World Cup Final where he was awarded with the FIFA Golden Ball as the tournament’s most outstanding player.


At the age of ten, Zidane joined the junior team of US Saint-Henri, a local club based in La Castellane. After a year and a half he switched to SO Septèmes Valons. When he was 14 years old he was selected to attend a training camp run by the French Football Federation and was spotted by a talent scout for the AS Cannes. Zidane travelled to Cannes for a six-week stay, but ended up staying with the club for four years as a pro. At first the 14 year old lived in a dormitory with other trainees, but soon he moved in with Cannes director Jean-Claude Elineau and his family. In 2001, Zidane signed a four year contract and transferred to Real Madrid for a record breaking transfer fee of 150 billion Italian lire (roughly €75 millions). Real Madrid won the 2002 UEFA Champions League, and in the next season Zidane helped his team secure a victory in La Liga. Zlatan’s first league match for FC Barlecona took place on Barcelona’s home arena Camp Nou against Sporting de Gijón and ended 3-0 with Zlatan scoring a goal in the final minutes. In 2010, Zlatan signed a three year long contract with his third Italian football club – AC Milan. He scored his first goal for AC Milan in a match against Laszio.

Wayne Rooney has broken numerous records and been showered with national and international awards. As of late 2011, he has –received the England Player of the Year award twice (2008 and 2009) and the FIFA Club World Cup Golden Ball once (2008). Rooney played for Liverpool Schoolboys as a child, and then for the Copperhouse boys’ club in the  local Walton and Kirkdale junior league where he attracted the attention of a talent scout from Everton.  At the tender age of nine, Ronney joined the Everton club and two years later he was their mascot for the Merseyside derby. At the age of 15, Rooney was playing for the under-19s and he scored eight goals over eight matches during the FA Youth Cup in 2002. On October 4, 2008, Rooney became the youngest player in the history of the league to have played 200 matches. His 200th game was a match against Blackburn Rovers won by Manchester United. On August 22, 2009, Rooney became the 20th Manchester United player to have scored a hundred goals for the team.

During the 2010/2011 season, Ronney signed renewed his contracted with Manchester United. The new contract will expire in 2015.

During his football career, Ronaldo played 97 international matches for the Brazilian national team and scored 62 goals. At the age of 12, Ronaldo was active in the Tennis Club Valqueire where he didn’t play tennis but futebol de salão, a type of football (soccer) played with a very small ball. Playing with such as small ball is believed to have improved Ronaldo’s ball skills.

In 1993, Ronaldo started playing for Cruzeiro di Belo Horizonte, a football club on the rise. During Ronaldo’s year with Cruzeiro di Belo Horizonte, the team won Copa do Brasil for the first time. Ronaldo played 14 games and scored 12 goals.

In 1994, Ronaldo joined PSV Eindhoven and moved to the Netherlands. He scored 30 goals during his first season, but suffered a knee injury during his second season which forced him to sit out a lot of matches. During the 13 matches he did play he scored a total of 12 goals. In 1996, Ronaldo helped his team to a victory in the Dutch Cup.

After receiving $17 million, PSV Eindhoven released Ronaldo to FC Barcelona. During his first season in Spain, Ronaldo played 49 games and scored 47 goals. FC Barcelona won EUFA Cup Winner’s Cup, Copa del Rey and Supercopa de España. In 1997, Ronaldo became the best scorer in La Liga by scoring 34 goals over 37 matches.

Ronaldo transferred to Inter Milan in 1997. He quickly adapted to life in Italy and became the second highest goal scorer during his initial season with Inter Milan. Ronaldo was appointed the role of team captain and stayed with Inter until 2002. In match against Lecce in 1999, Ronaldo suffered a knee injury and was forced to undergo surgery. He returned to the football field the following year, but only played for seven minutes before damaging his knee again. He could not return to football until the fall of 2002, and by then he had already transferred to Real Madrid.

Despite the knee injury Real Madrid was willing to pay €46 million for Ronaldo and he commenced play in October 2002, scoring two goals during his first match and receiving standing ovations from the crowd. During his first season with Real Madrid, Ronaldo scored 23 goals in league matches. Real Madrid won the Intercontinental Cup in 2002, and was victorious in both the La Liga Championships and the Spanish Super Cup in 2003. By the end of the 2003/2004 season Ronaldo suffered another injury, but remained the top scorer of the league and was awarded the Pichichi Trophy.

In 2007 Ronaldo transferred to AC Milan where he played 14 matches and scored seven goals during his first season. All in all, Ronaldo played 20 matches for AC Milan before suffering another severe knee injury and during this time he scored a total of nine goals. The knee injury benched Ronaldo for the remainder of the season and his contract was not renewed.

While trying to rehabilitate his injured knee after yet another surgery, Ronaldo played for Flamengo in Brazil. He then signed with their arch rival Corinthians and scored ten goals for them over the course of 14 matches, helping Corinthians to victories in both Campeonato Paulista and Brazil Cup. In Brazilian Serie A, Ronaldo scored 12 goals over 20 matches.

When Ronaldo’s contract with Corinthians was renewed in February 2010 he announced that he would retire from football at the end of 2011. However, injuries and his struggle with hypothyroidism forced him into retirement in February 2011.

Private life

  • Ronaldo was born in 1976 as the third child of  Nélio Nazário de Lima and Sônia dos Santos Barata.

Pelé started playing in Bauru Athletic Club juniors at the age of 14. He turned pro at the age of 17 and premiered in the national team of Brazil two years later during 1958 FIFA World Cup. For the first time ever, Brazil won the World Cup. In the final against Sweden, Pelé scored two of Brazil’s five goals.

By the early 1960’s Pelé was an international superstar and widely hailed as the best footballer of them all. Several football clubs, including many European clubs, showed an interest in recruiting him, but he elected to stay with Santos in his native Brazil until 1974. During this time, Santos won a long row of importants titles and received numerous awards. They won the prestigious Copa Libertadores several times and became one of Brazil’s the most highly regarded football clubs.

In 1962, Pelé participated in his second FIFA World Cup. He was badly injured, but the Brazilian team still managed to capture the gold. In the 1966 FIFA World Cup Pelé was injured again and this time the Brazilian team was forced to leave the tournament during  the play off.

By 1970 FIFA World Cup Pelés injuries had healed and he could help his team to victory once more. In the world cup final against Italy Pelé scored one of Brazil’s four goals, and he assisted another two.

During his time in the Brazilian national team, Pelé played 92 matches and scored a total of 77 goals.

Pelé retired from Santos in 1974 but returned to the football field one year later playing for New York Cosmos. In 1977 he retired once more, and this time it was for good. Since then, Pelé has served as an ambassador for the sport and he has also been active in Brazilian politics.

Private life

  • Pelé is a nickname, his full registered name is Edson Arantes do Nascimento. His parents named him after the inventor Thomas Edison.
