The Government of Cyprus just announced that they will begin to block the ISP’s of those online gambling sites that operate illegally within its borders. The countries internet providers will begin to receive notification with respect to some 270 online gambling sites that operate illegally within Cyprus. Internet service providers will be expected to comply with these demands within 72 hours of receiving notice.
This lest includes some major players in the online community with names like William Hill, Bwin.Party Digital and Betfair to name just a few. Most of the larger names in the industry had exited the Cyprus market prior to a law that came into effect in 2012, which is thought to have been created to protect Greece’s gambling monopoly OPAP. Those ISP providers who fail to comply with the notifications could face fines of up to €30,000.
Greece continues to see itself struggle amid the ruins of its financial sector. This is seen as an attempt to try to increase much needed revenue for Greece as it attempts to rebuild after the economic collapse that almost crippled the nation.
